Okay, let's start with the basics. Squall was named by his mother, Raine (Leonhart) Loire. It's possible that she may have named him Squall because of it's meaning; A squall is a type of storm, more specificly "a sudden violent gust of wind often attended with rain or snow". Her name looks and sounds an awful lot like the word "Rain", so if she was thinking along the lines of Squall meaning storm, then there is a connection between her and her son; He's the storm, and she's the rain. If this were so, then she may have also been providing a connection between him and his birth father Laguna Loire. A Laguna just happens to be another rain-based occurrence.
There are a few possibilites of why Squall took on the last name of Leonhart as opposed to Loire. It could be that Raine and Laguna weren't married at the time of his birth, however an image of her grave at the end of the game suggests otherwise. It could be that when Squall was sent to the orphanage, Edea didn't know who his father happened to be and was thus forced to call him by his mother's surname. Though Winhill is a very small town, it is not located near the Stone Orphanage where Squall was sent and so there would be no reason for Edea to know that Raine and Laguna were together.
As I said earlier, a Squall is a type of storm. Now don't worry, I'm not going to try and convince you that Squall is the weather man or anything, but when you think about it, he's a bit of a storm himself. He's got a routine that works for him, he's got his beliefs; As long as he doesn't get close to anyone, it won't hurt him when he loses them. When Rinoa comes into his life, he doesn't know what to believe anymore. He doesn't want to get hurt again, but at the same time he knows that now, since he has already fallen in love with her, he can't live without her presence. His emotions are a storm inside of him, like "a violent gust of wind" blew through and turned his carefully organized world into chaos.
The name 'Leonhart' can easily be translated into the word 'Lionheart', which in turn means somebody brave, or courageous. Both those terms easily describe Squall, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out. Now we could stop there, but if you switch the words around it can be interpreted as "heart of a lion". The game has quite a focus on lions, it's quite obvious just by looking at Squall's appearance; there's a lion on his necklace, ring, and gunblade. Coincidence? I think not. Squall also demonstrates his lion-like attributes in his personality. He's calm, but powerful, brave.. Yeah. Squall's a lion.
