A Princess and her Knight
Rinoa is nicknamed as Princess by many of the members of her resistance faction, The Forest Owls. When Squall finds out that Rinoa is a sorceress, he pledges to be her knight.
Knight - A defender, champion, or zealous upholder of a cause or principle.
- The devoted champion of a lady.
Prin·cess - A woman who is a ruler of a principality.
- A woman regarded as having the status or qualities of a princess.
Typically, it was part of a knight's duty to defend the royal family. This is what Squall promised to do for Rinoa, and what he ended up doing on numerous occasions through out the game: protecting her.
In legend, a knight could achieve the highest standing by winning the hand of the princess. This is metaphorical to what happens to Squall during the story of Final Fantasy VIII. As a result of the journey that Squall took to win over Rinoa's heart, he found peace with himself and his life. In the same way that a knight would achieve a superior rank, he was able to reach the best possible emotional state.
Star
Stars come up again and again when concerning the relationship between Squall and Rinoa. The star is a symbol of hope, something which Squall lacks but Rinoa has in abundance.
Incident 01 » Squall sees a shooting star at the SeeD ball, predeeding his and Rinoa's first meeting.
Incident 02 » Rinoa dreams that she and Squall had made plans to watch shooting stars together.
Incident 03 » Squall and Rinoa finally do watch stars together at the end of the game, after everything has been sorted out.
Incident 04 » Rinoa's ultimate weapon is called the "Shooting Star", while her ultimate limit break is the "Wishing Star".
Incident 05 » The Squall Card refines into 3 Three Stars.
The Field
The flowery field beside Edea's Stone Orphanage, pictured in the opening full motion video, is where Squall and Rinoa make "the Promise". After learning that she is a sorceress, Rinoa tells Squall of a dream of hers in which she and Squall had made plans together. It soon turned nightmare as she realized she had forgotten where they had promised to meet. It is then that they decide on a meeting place, where they will wait if they ever get separated; the field.
Griever
Griever is, in Squall's mind, the ultimate guardian force. Through out the game, Squall is often described as a lion, while Rinoa is commonly associated with wings. It is sometimes believed that Griever is a winged lion, which seems as though it would fit well with Squall and Rinoa.
Squall owns a ring which is molded in the shape of Griever. Rinoa thinks that it looks cool, and asks Zell to make her a replica of it. Zell manages to borrow it from Squall and gives it to Rinoa for safe keeping until he is able to make the new one, however he never finds time to do so. As Rinoa is preparing to be put to sleep in the sorceress memorial, she attempts to return the ring to Squall, but he tells her to keep it.
