Abilities
Ellone is no ordinary girl, but possesses the mysterious power to manipulate time. Due to an abnormal pattern in her brainwaves, she is able to send a person's conciousness into the past of someone that she knows, a phenomenon which she refers to as "connecting". In order for Connection to happen, Ellone needs two key things; a person alive in the present for her to send, and a person who she knew in the past who's memories can be revisited. Then Ellone can work her magic.

Ellone uses her power countless times through out the duration of Final Fantasy VIII. It is her belief that if she can see the events which led to the tragic separation of her family, then she can also find a way to change them. Since it is not possible for her to send herself, and Raine has long since been dead, she uses Squall to see into the memories of her father, Laguna Loire. It is then that Ellone is able to see how very much she was loved, making it easier for her to accept the fact that it is impossible, even for her, to change history.

How it Works
During Connection, the person who has been sent (we'll call that person Party A) falls into a deep slumber, accompanied by what seems to be a very vivid and realistic dream. When this happens, they are said to have entered the Dreamworld. In this dream, Party A is placed in the body of the one who's memories have been revisited, who we will refer to as Party B. Party A has no control over the body of Party B, and must watch helplessly until Ellone disconnects, thus allowing them to wake up.

The present form of Party B is completely oblivious to the fact that Connection might be going on. It is only their past form which is affected and even then, the effects are very minimal. While in the Dreamworld, Party A is able to talk and think just as they would if they were awake, and are even able to converse with Ellone should they choose to do so. When this happens, Party B can sense that something is going on, but is unable to hear them clearly enough to take it as anything serious. The past form of Laguna often referred to these voices as those of the "faeries".

Unlike Party A, Ellone remains conscious for the entirety of each Connection, and does not take on the body of another person in the memory. For her it is like watching a movie, only without the television set.

Also, it is notable that Ellone does not need to be with, or even near, Party A or B to perform her ability. As a matter of fact, she doesn't even need to know where they are. The only requirements are that Party A is alive in the present, and that Ellone has met Party B at least once in her life.

Junction Machine Ellone
As a child, Ellone unwillingly spends her time in Esthar being researched by a scientist known as Dr. Odine. Dr. Odine finds a way to emulate the special pattern in the current running through her brainwaves. Using this knowledge, he constructs a small prototype which he refers to as "Junction Machine Ellone". Unfortunately for Odine, Laguna takes Ellone away from him before he is able to complete this project, and so in the present time, it remains as a toy.

In the future, however, Junction Machine Ellone has evolved into a powerful working machine. Sorceress Ultimecia uses it to send herself back to the present time, where she possesses the bodies of other sorceresses in order to get her hands on Ellone. As it turns out, Ellone's special ability is a key part of Ultimecia's master plan of complete and utter Time Compression. Luckily, however, her efforts go to waste, and she never manages to get her hands on our beloved Ellone.

Trouble Brewing
As you might have already guessed, life for Ellone is not just a walk in the park; there is much trouble and hardship that she must endure as a consequence of having this nifty little power.

Ever since she was a child, Ellone has always had to live knowing that at any moment she could be taken away from the ones she loves. Her powers, you see, are a very intriguing and desirable quality, and there are many people who seek to abuse it. Often, they are willing to go to the most extreme lengths in order to get it, killing and destroying mercilessly without a second thought.

It was because of her powers that that Fisherman's Horizon was almost burnt to the ground by the Galbadian Army. It was because of them that she was sent away from her dearest Squall to live on the White SeeD Ship. It was because of them that she was kidnapped away to Esthar, torn from the care of her loving parents Raine and Laguna Loire.
